Arnold - The Early Years

Apart from the 73 minutes of early contest and outdoor posing footage of Arnold and Franco, the bonus material from this collector's DVD includes more recent out-takes, on-stage and behind the scenes video from the Arnold Classic.

Firstly we see Arnold on stage in England aged 19 on the 28th of January 1967, doing curls and then guest posing. Next aged 20 while outdoors in a garden he pumps up with DB curls before posing. This includes closeups of his amazing arms and is the earliest Arnold colour footage we know of.

In 1970 you see Arnold as he wins his final NABBA Universe in the Pro class. Also seen briefly are Draper, Zane, Columbu, Coe, Beckles and more. This is followed by brief highlights from the 1970 Mr Olympia. The Olympia footage is poorly lit but included in the DVD as it is so rare. See Joe present the trophy to Arnold at this event.

A real highlight is Arnold guest posing aged 23 in USA along with Franco posing at the same event.

1972 poolside on the Gold Coast in sunny Australia, Arnold and Franco pump and pose both individually and duo in a superb in-depth segment including more great closeups of Arnold's huge arms. No other similar outdoor posing footage of Arnold was ever recorded in his career. 1972 was a big year for Arnold as we see him defeat Sergio at the 72 Mr Olympia in Essen, Germany. Posing also by Serge Nubret, Franco Columbu and Arnold plus posedown and award for his 3rd Olympia crown.

In 1974 it was back to Australia again for more guest posing, this time at the IFBB Mr Southern Hemisphere contest, with posing also by the winner, Roger Walker, later 6th 1980 Mr Olympia.

Next we see Arnold posing at the 1975 Mr Olympia in South Africa, plus posing by Lou Ferrigno and Serge Nubret - the posedown and final award again to Arnold.

In 1980 Arnold made his comeback in Australia at the Mr Olympia contest held at the Sydney Opera House. It was to be Olympia victory # 7. See his solo posing, many comparisons, compulsory poses and more as Arnold once again stands victorious. Includes scenes of many of his closest rivals from Mentzer to Zane etc. A tour de force with Arnold, since voted the most popular bodybuilder of all time.

Held October 4th, 1980 at the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. This is the contest in which Arnold made his "comeback" after five years of retirement, and gained his seventh Mr. Olympia title.
The line up also included Mike Mentzer, Chris Dickerson, Frank Zane, Boyer Coe, Roy Duval, Casey Viator, Roy Callender, Ken Waller, Samir Bannout, Tom Platz, Danny Padilla, Roger Walker, etc.. Includes prejudging footage plus the show.
The most controversial Mr. Olympia of all time! Strictly a contest video showing all competitors, and quite different to the video called "The Comeback" (aka Total Rebuild.). Film to video transfer, music added.

EXPLANATION OF THE CONTENT OF THE 1980 Mr OLYMPIA VIDEO:
Some customers have asked why our programme of the 1980 Mr Olympia is nothing like the modern day Olympia programmes, shot with 5 cameras complete with full onstage live sound track with the results announced for every competitor, interview with the winner, posedowns etc and so on. However most young guys of today don''t understand the circumstances of that event in Sydney, 22 years ago as I write this in July 2002.

1. At that time there was no official film or video made of the Mr Olympia as this did not commence till 1982 in London when video had become popular with the home market world wide.
2. In 1980 VHS home videos had only just started to appear and hardly anyone had a VHS VCR. At that time I recorded all contests and features on Super 8 film as I had done since 1968. Movie film was mostly silent and processing was very expensive then compared to the cost of video today. The technological advances since then have been huge.
3. The old fashioned technology of 1980 was shooting on 50'' super 8 rolls of film that run for just 3.5 mins and cost a small fortune in those days compared to video tape today.
4. For the whole contest I had a bag of 50'' films sufficient to last for one hour, and that was it. When it got to the final awards I was down to my last 50'' reel of film. The MC was really spinning it out and it took a lot of time to get through the awards from 6th to 1st due to the continuous booing! I had to conserve film or have none left showing Arnold as the winner, and final contest moments. It was a terrible position to be in.
5. After showing 6th place I held back till the winner was announced, waiting to run my last moments of film I had left. I would give anything to turn back the clock and have another shot at it, with hind sight! So no, there was no tape that was cut as the video tape is an exact copy of every single second of movie film that I shot.
6. I had to pay the contest promoter a great deal of money for my centre front row seat and the rights to record the event. I had no rights to go back stage or on stage. You just didn''t do things like that on super 8 film back then.
7. A USA TV broadcaster came to record the event but for some strange reason they did not put the event to air and went over their tapes! So my record was the ONLY record showing the contest from front of stage. Being Arnold''s comeback contest and also his last contest most fans are truly grateful of having some record of this famous and controversial event as he won his 7th Olympia crown. Chris Dickerson was second and this was also Mike Mentzer''s last contest. Frank Zane was the defending Mr Olympia champion from 1979.
8. An Aussie documentary crew did film parts of the contest and some backstage footage highlighting Arnold and it was called "The Comeback".
9. In 1981 there was NO VIDEO released on the Mr Olympia won by Franco Columbu. But by 1982 many people were starting to own VHS VCRs and the event has been released on video every year since then. My 1980 film transferred to video was in fact the first serious attempt at recording the whole Mr Olympia contest bearing in mind that all previous Olympias from 1965 to 1979 were not recorded apart from some 8 mm film shot from the audience in some years.

This year’s Super Bowl of bodybuilding, Mr. Olympia, will see current titleholder Ronnie Coleman go for an unprecedented 9th straight Sandow on Saturday night, September 30th. If successful, Coleman will break Lee Haney’s record of 8 Mr. Olympia titles. On the women’s side, Yaxeni Oriquen (Ms. Olympia), Davana Medina (Figure) and Jen Hendershott (Fitness) will return to defend their titles.

One major schedule change moves the Mr. Olympia prejudging to Friday night (September 29) at the Orleans Arena (last year it was held on Saturday morning). In addition, the Ms. Olympia Finals will move to Friday night at the Arena as well, Also taking place at the Arena on Friday night is the Fitness Finals. The Figure Olympia Finals will shift to Saturday night with the Mr. Olympia Finals. The Ms. Olympia, Fitness and Figure prejudging will take place at the Expo on Friday, September 29. The 8000 seat Orleans Arena hosted its first Olympia competition in 2005 and proved to be the ideal venue for the event.

The Olympia Expo will return to the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 29 – Sept. 30, with increased space on the main floor to accommodate a greater number of new exhibitors than ever before, plus a host of new events. The UFC Octagon and mixed-martial arts exhibition that was a big hit last year is scheduled to be back.

To handle the traffic flow to and from the Convention Center and the Orleans, as well as other popular Vegas hotels and destinations, a fleet of buses will be providing free transportation throughout the weekend.

IFBB President, Ben Weider commented “This year’s Olympia will be the biggest ever, spearheaded by Ronnie Coleman’s attempt to win his 9th Mr. Olympia title.
